***PLEASE NOTE : Due to safety concerns, we're dropping Leg #1 this year.  The relay will start at 6:30 am from the Lakeside Community Centre, the regular start of Leg #2


1- REGISTRATION


  • Teams will be selected on a first-come-first-served.  The mailing address is on the 2023 registration form

  • A maximum of 70 teams will be accepted

  • Cost is $650 per team (non-refundable)

2- WAIVERS

  • Waivers must be signed by each runner when they sign in at the registration vehicle on race day.  

3- TEAM INFORMATION

  • Team themes/costumes are encouraged. Have fun, within the limits of common sense and safety.

  • Limit the number of team vehicles you have on site as parking and overall traffic flow is a problem.

  • Up to 10 members per team, with a minimum of five. (Runners can run more than one leg for the same team)

  • All participants must sign a waiver prior to participating.

  • No substitution of runners during legs.

  • All runners must sign in with the registrar (at the finish line) prior to the start of their leg. If they don't, we assume your runner didn't start and your team will be given the slowest time for that leg plus 10 minutes.

  • Since Leg #1 starts in the dark, all runners participating in that leg must wear a reflective vest (you MUST provide your own vest).

  • Teams who fail to start a runner for any of the legs will not be disqualified. They will be assigned the slowest time for that leg plus 10 minutes, and life will go on.

  • If a runner does not finish a leg, that’s OK. The team will be assigned the slowest time plus 5 minutes.

  • For safety reasons, all participants must be able to maintain a 6:35/k (10:00/mile) pace. Leg cut-off times are based on the slowest participants running at a 6:35/k (10:00/mile) pace. It is the Team Captain’s responsibility to ensure that all team members and capable of maintaining this pace.

  • Legs will start on time. Teams with a runner who does not complete his/her leg prior to the start of the next leg will be responsible to either remove their runner from the course or remain at the finish line until he/she finishes. That runner will be given the slowest time plus 5 minutes. The finish line crew cannot stay behind to time that runner.

  • If, for some reason, the relay gets off schedule, the next leg will be started on time in accordance with the posted start times. This could mean that some runners may not be given the full 10:00/mile allowance for the current leg. The bottom lines is that we must finish in Lunenburg on time at the end of the day.

  • Bib numbers must be worn on the front of the runner’s shirt or jacket - NOT SHORTS, clearly visible, using 4 pins (one in each corner).

  • Runners will be recorded (team number, position, and time) as they pass through the finish chute. Runners who do not pass through the chute or who do not clearly display their team number may be eliminated from the final results.

  • Runners must be at least 16 years old.

4- THE RULES - for all participants and all support crew members

We want to be able to continue to offer this event for your enjoyment. Therefore, we ask for your cooperation in following the rules. The event is monitored by the Provincial Government and the RCMP. If they feel that the organizers or participants are not acting responsibly, they have the power to shut us down.

  • It is a privilege, not a right, that the participants of this event are able to enjoy the use of the roadways. Failure, by any one of the participants, to comply with any of the following rules could result in disqualification of one or more teams or possibly the cancellation of the event. Your consideration and cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

  • It is the responsibility of the team captains to ensure that all team members and support crews are aware of all rules. It is the responsibility of all participating runners, and members of team support crews, to follow the rules.

  • All runners will be ultimately responsible for their own safety. Common sense must prevail at all times.

  • You will not be permitted to obstruct vehicular traffic.

1. Run on the left side of the road only. Runners on leg 3 will be directed off the highway onto the St. Margaret’s Bay Rail Trail and back onto the highway. Runners disobeying a marshal’s instructions will be penalized. (15 minute penalty)

2. Run in single file, as close to the shoulder as possible. Overtake other runners only when it is safe to do so. Move to the left of the white line or off the pavement to allow for oncoming traffic. (5 minute penalty)

3. Only one team runner at a time will be permitted on the course. No pacing by team members. (10 minute penalty)

4. Participants can only run for one team. (10 minute penalty)

5. No vehicles, or bicycles, are to follow along at the pace of the runners. Team vehicles must proceed along the roadway at a normal, safe speed. Do not slow down to have a conversation with your runner. (10 minute penalty)

6. No baby joggers, rollerblades or similar wheeled devices on the course. (10 minute penalty)

7. No dogs may accompany runners on the course. (10 minute penalty)

8. Vehicles parked along the route or at the start/finish lines must have ALL 4 WHEELS TO THE RIGHT OF THE WHITE LINE OR OFF THE PAVED ROADWAY IF THERE IS NO WHITE LINE. (5 minute penalty)

9. For road safety reasons, no one associated with the event is permitted to cross the roadway on foot at any time, except (with caution) at the start/finish areas. (10 minute penalty) The only exception is a medical emergency.

10. For safety reasons, no one, except the assigned aid station workers, is permitted to give refreshments to runners along the course. (10 minute penalty)

11. No MP3 players or phones of any kind, with or without headsets, may be worn by runners on the course. (confiscation of player + 5 minute penalty)

12. Do not throw any object or substance at anyone or anything along the roadways. (10 minute penalty)

13. Do not leave garbage along the route or at the start/finish locations. (10 minute penalty)

14. Keep the finish area, and the entrance to it, clear to allow for the incoming runners.

15. Do not stand on the paved section of the roadway to the left of the white line along the course or at the start/finish areas. (Keep the roadways clear at all times to allow for passing motorists.)

The Penalties:

  • Minor infractions: 5:00 penalty.

  • More serious infractions, or second infraction: 10:00 penalty.

  • Major infractions (clearly dangerous or illegal) 15:00 - 20:00.

  • Time penalties will be assigned by the event organizers and added to a team's accumulated time

  • Teams that accumulate 30 minutes in penalties will not be permitted to continue their participation in the event and an application will not be accepted from that team for the following year.

5- THE RELAY

  • All 10 legs will start on time as per the established scheduled.

  • There are no change or shower facilities available along the route or at any of the finish areas.

  • There are port-a-potties available at the start of the relay and at the ends of legs 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7. There are pit toilets at the end of leg 4. There are public washrooms at or near the finish line on legs 8 and 9.

  • The finish line will be the imaginary line extending from the bumper of the finish line vehicle.

  • Water stops will be provided (at 4K intervals - approximately). For road safety reasons, team members are not permitted to give their runners refreshments or cross the road on foot along the course. Penalties will be given to offenders, which could result in team disqualification.

  • We need teams to help us with the water stops. We'll provide the equipment you will need. Theme aid stations and costumes are encouraged. Prizes will be awarded for the most enthusiastic water stop.

  • Results will be posted at the finish line at the end of each leg.

6- AWARDS

  • Location: Bluenose Academy, 18 Tannery Road, Lunenburg, NS

  • Time: We cannot guarantee an exact start time for the awards presentations. They will get under way as soon as possible after the last runner finishes Leg #10 in Lunenburg and we have had sufficient time to compile the final results. That will most likely be some time around 7:00 pm. Please proceed to Bluenose Academy ASAP

  • Refreshments: Soup, sandwiches, burritos, or whatever is available, and pop (room temperature - can't mess with tradition) in an informal setting on uncomfortable chairs.

  • Recognition: Top 3 teams and the team that operates the most spirited water stop (theme and costumes)

  • Additional Awards: Major prizes will be draw prizes with all eligible teams, who are in attendance at the awards presentation ceremonies. If a team is not there to collect their draw prize, we will draw again for that particular prize

  • Results: Complete results will be posted on our website the following day as soon as possible.
